Shaler Area School District

Superintendent Donald Lee posted a note on the district's Web site on Oct. 8, saying that the middle school has an abnormally high absentee rate of about 20 percent.

Here is a cut-and-paste from the superintendent's note:

"The purpose of this message is to report that even though absentee rates are normal in most schools we are starting to see signs that some of those absent student have flu symptons. The process that seems to be unfolding is once a person goes to his/her physician and H1N1 is supected the doctor orders a test and in two cases that we have been made aware of H1N1 has been confirmed but the report back to us comes after the child has alreday returned to school. The point to my message is simply that the flu season is upon us and we cannot escape it and we must resign ourself to the fact that seasonal flu and H1N1 is now in Shaler Area. We continue to urge you to pay attention to your families' symptoms and if your children are demonstrating any fever whatsoever we are asking that you keep your child home."

The case was reported at South Park High School.

"South Park School District will continue to monitor the flu situation within our schools and we will let you know if the situation becomes more critical," Superintendent Richard Bucchianeri said in the letter.

A case of H1N1 flu was confirmed last month by the Gateway School District. School leaders said the case involves a student at Gateway Middle School.

"If you have a child that has a fever, you need to keep them home until the fever breaks for 24 hours without any medication, then they're able to come back," Ringgold Superintendent Gary Hamilton said.

The school district is also telling parents what symptoms to look for, posting information on the district's website and sending a letter home.

West Jefferson Hills School District

Parents of students in the West Jefferson Hills School District received a letter confirming two cases of H1N1 -- one student from Pleasant Hills Middle School and another from Thomas Jefferson High School.

The district said both students were absent from classes.

Pittsburgh Universities

The University of Pittsburgh had one confirmed case of H1N1 flu in August, and others reported flu-like symptoms, university officials told WTAE Channel 4 Action News.

Only one case at the Oakland campus was confirmed while the others had not been diagnosed. The University of Pittsburgh has established a Web site with H1N1 flu resources.

Confirmed H1N1 flu cases at Carnegie Mellon University in August prompted the school to establish a hotline to keep students informed of any new outbreaks. The number is 412-268-4161.

CMU officials said the university is seeing a decrease in the number of students with flu-like symptoms, but the university is urging students to be vigilant in spotting cases.

Health officials said those who should get a vaccine, currently in the works, include pregnant women, people between 6 months and 24 years old and older adults in high-risk groups.

"But most importantly, parents need to keep their children home from school (if they are sick)," said Allegheny County Health Department spokesman Guillermo Cole.
