PITTSBURGH -- A new device being explored by vascular surgeons at Allegheny General Hospital could help people who suffer from high blood-pressure.The Rheos Hypertension System is implanted in the body, electrically stimulating the body's natural blood-pressure sensors. It is going to be tested at the Gerald McGinnis Cardiovascular Institute at AGH.The device could also offer new treatment for those who suffer from hyper-extension, too.
When the devices carotid baroreceptors are activated, signals are sent through neural pathways to the brain and interpreted as a rise in blood-pressure. The brain then works to counteract the perceived rise in blood-pressure by sending signals to other parts of the body to lower high blood-pressure.AGH is one of only two hospitals in Pennsylvania that is participating in the study, and a Pittsburgh woman will become the first to receive the new device in early July.
