The following is a transcript of a report by medical editor Marilyn Brooks that first aired May 14, 2008, on WTAE Channel 4 Action News at 5 p.m.
After comparing a triple-drug regimen to other treatments, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh found it to be the most effective at holding down the human immunodeficiency virus or HIV.
But researchers also found that for patients who can't tolerate the triple-drug regimen, a two-drug treatment was just as comparable. The study of 753 volunteers at 55 centers compared two triple-drug treatments to other two-drug combinations. The bottom line was determined that the gold standard remains the triple-drug treatment, but for those who have side effects, there are other options.
