2008 ALIQUIPPA, Pa. -- Employees at the Commonwealth Medical Center in Aliquippa said they would not be striking, even though a strike was approved last month.Union members at the former Aliquippa Community Hospital voted overwhelmingly to call on the new owners of the hospital to recognize their union, respect seniority in any layoffs and recalls, and reinstate fired union officers.On Tuesday, officials representing the workers said the hospital's new management has agreed to recognize the union, averting a Jan. 30 strike deadline."Commonwealth Medical Center missed the big opportunity to reach out to its employees, to reach out to the community and everybody else," said fired worker Mary Driscoll.Shortly have workers were fired, a rally for quality care and fairness was held at the Aliquippa Serbian.
