Pittsburgh Surgeon Goes Through Eyelid To Operate On Brain AneurysmsPOSTED: 4:02 pm EST November 9,
2007 PITTSBURGH -- The following is a transcript of a report by medical editor Marilyn Brooks that first aired Nov. 9, 2007, on WTAE Channel 4 Action News at 5 p.m. Brain surgery through the eyelid is being performed by only two neurosurgeons in the country, one of them in Pittsburgh. The surgery leaves no scars and allows patients to go home in two days.In this case we're talking about brain aneurysms. They can be coiled or clipped. The surgical approach depends on the location of the aneurysm. The new eyelid technique is only good for those that develop in the frontal areas of the brain.Crystal Haywood, 50, recently had a brain aneurysm clipped in a most unusual way."He said, 'I want to go through your eye,''" said Haywood. The unique approach requires removing a small piece of bone around the eye."We often choose this approach because of good accessibility, low morbidity, but it also gives us a good cosmetic result," said Dr. Erik Happ. The technique was modified to give access to frontal brain aneurysms.Once the bone is removed, the covering of the brain is opened."So, then we go underneath," said Dr. Khaled Aziz. "We have a special microscope, special instruments. We dissected the aneurysm, dissected the parent vessels and put the clips around the aneurysm safely without problems. When the bone is put back by the neurosurgeon, we come back into the operating field and close that dense tissue back over."
