The following is a transcript of a report by medical editor Marilyn Brooks that first aired Oct. 19, 2007, on WTAE Channel 4 Action News at 5 p.m.

Red wine is known to be good for your health, especially your heart. Now, new research finds it might also be good for your stomach.

New research shows red wine contains the trifecta of anti-microbial properties: ethanol, ph levels or acidity and reseveratrol, a plant nutrient found in grape skins, juice and vines.

"So, all three together may pack this powerful punch, and again this not just heart health, this is a benefit for something that's very scary right now, lowering the risk of food-borne illness," said UPMC nutritionist Leslie Bonci.

If you've ever been in a wine shop, you know you can pay just about any price you want for a bottle of wine. You can go very upscale and pay $50 for a bottle or you can do something more reasonable like $15 a bottle.

The neat thing about the study is that it doesn't seem to matter about the price. It's all in the color of the wine: red.

Researchers said cabernet, pinot noir and merlot have the right stuff to protect against salmonella typhimurium, H.pylori and the potentially fatal listeria mon ocytogenes and E. coli .

The most promising results involved H.pylori, which is transmitted by food and water. It's the main cause of stomach ulcers.

Researchers are currently examining the effects of numerous types of red wines as well as grape juice. They also tested white wines but with no positive results.
