Pole Dancing Workout Trend Now In Pittsburgh

POSTED: 4:26 pm EST February 15, 2007

With dim lighting, disco balls and soft coverings on the walls, this is anything but your normal gym.

WTAE Channel 4 Action News anchor Kelly Frey went to Fitness With A Twist, where women can get pole dance instruction.

It's a hot fitness craze that hasn't been in the Pittsburgh area until now.

"This class not only helps get you in shape but it helps you feel more confident as a woman, and sexy, and learn some new moves," instructor Raelin Foster said. "When I was little, I could not dance. I used to be called Urkel, so I've come a long way."

Moves like the ballerina, the pretzel and the backward bend will make you sweat.

"No one teaches us how to be sexy. No one teaches us how to feel good. We get to exercise and everybody feels beautiful when they leave," owner Vanessa Connell said.

"It's a lot of fun," student Abby Gleason said. "It's hard. I knew it was going to be hard. My arms are going to hurt tomorrow."

"It's exciting," said Stephanie, another student. "When I tell people at first, they laugh at me. At first, I was embarrassed. But now, I think it's cool."

Since the business opened almost a year ago, women from all backgrounds have been giving it a try, Connell said.

"I feel confident as a mother that I can go out there and do it like the other girls do," Natasha Adderley said. "And it doesn't look trashy. It's classy. No pasties. Whatever you want to wear."
