JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Crews removed seven horses that animal experts said were malnourished from a Greene County farm Saturday.
Seven horses, including a mare and a foal, were loaded into trailers and taken into quarantine. Humane officers, along with a group called the Second Chance Equine Association, obtained a warrant to seize the horses at the farm of Stanley and Margaret Halsey.
Officials said the horses were not getting enough food and water, which the owner disputes.
"We will take the horses to quarantine and bring them back to health. Then, they will be put up for adoption or foster homes, hopefully, adoptions," said Chris LeJeune, of Second Chance Equine Association.
"We have a big pond right down there over the hill. They go down there every day and drink. We fill these troughs every morning and every night, but they still have that pond down there," Margaret Halsey said.
The humane officer said citations will be issued against the owners of the horses sometime early this week.
