Glenshaw Vodka Makers Use Eco-Friendly IngredientsPOSTED: 7:18 pm EDT October 10,
2008 GLENSHAW, Pa. -- It may have been James Bond who introduced vodka to the world with his famous, “Shaken, not stirred,” catchphrase, but two men from Glenshaw, Allegheny County, are reacquainting Pennsylvania to the drink with the state’s first ever vodka distillery.“Vodka really wasn't known until 1965. James Bond really brought Vodka to the states,” said Prentiss Orr, who uses potatoes to make Boyd & Blair Potato Vodka. “It is an energy consideration too. It is the carbon footprint too. Why not use local potatoes? Why would we import them from somewhere else?”Barry Young is the scientist and sipper of the process and said it’s simple.Once the potatoes go through the mash prep tanks, it’s all about cooking and clarifying until the vodka is done.Every bottle contains eight to nine Pennsylvania potatoes, equaling 5,000 pounds each week.“Fewer people use potatoes because they are more expensive, but we have a system here that we can buy local, we can get them cheaper, we can get them in bulk, we can do it on a small scale and we can make a far better Vodka,” said Orr.Orr and Young hope to produce 1,000 cases by Christmas. They’ve already sold 1,500.Boyd & Blair Potato Vodka can be found in all Pennsylvania liquor stores and in many regional restaurants.
