The city of Pittsburgh is putting some green behind going green.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl announced on Wednesday at the City-County building downtown that he's creating a $100,000 Green Initiatives Trust Fund and Foundation. And he said he plans to hire a coordinator to oversee the project.

The money could be used to seek eco-friendly certification for government properties, including rooftop gardens, solar power or teach employees how to conserve.

It will allow for the hiring of a sustainability coordinator, who will work with the current energy and utilities manager in the Sustainable Development and Energy Efficiency office.

"The economic benefits are real," said Ravenstahl. "They are there, and that's why we felt it was important to take the step of realizing what we have already seen as a benefit in terms of the savings and put that right back in."
