New Hardee's Burger Thinks Outside BunPOSTED: 4:41 p.m. EST December 17, 2003 ST. LOUIS -- Hardee's has rolled out the fast-food industry's first bunless, lettuce-wrapped burger with just a handful of carbs.
It's meant to capitalize on America's low-carb dieting craze. But dietitians warn that Hardee's low-carb Thickburger, with one-third of a pound of beef, still is high in fat and calories.
The burger, wrapped in iceberg lettuce leaves, has a reduced amount of ketchup compared to other Thickburger menu items, but it has a full dose of mustard, mayo, cheese, tomato, dill pickles and red onion.
It has about 420 calories, 32 grams of fat and 5 grams of carbs. That compares with the regular's 850 calories and 57 fat grams.
A spokeswoman for Hardee's parent company said such food should be considered an indulgence.
