PITTSBURGH -- Giant Eagle is pulling foie gras from its Market District supermarkets in Shadyside and Bethel Park.Foie gras is made from the livers of ducks and geese that are force-fed a mixture of corn, lard and salt water until their livers become enlarged.Voices for Animals and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had been pressuring Giant Eagle to stop selling the product.
Giant Eagle officials said the company dumped foie gras because of concerns about seasonal availability, shelf space and sales trends, and not because of the animal rights groups' objections.Regardless, PETA said Giant Eagle made a "smart and ethical business decision."
