Bill Introduced To Reimburse Somerset County
Legislation Seeks $64K
POSTED: 11:02 a.m. EST February 27, 2003
SOMERSET, Pa. -- Somerset County is getting another chance at reimbursement for the cleanup of Flight 93.
State Sen. Richard Kasunic said his bill would pay $64,000 from the general fund to cover outstanding crash-related costs.
The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency had declined the
cash-strapped county's request after the airliner crashed Sept.
11, 2001, during the terrorist attacks.
County commissioners say they were thankful for the senator's
help. In the hours after the crash, the county responded by paying
for heavy machinery and phone service when investigators descended
to the crash site.
The FBI has already paid the county about $188,000, but the remaining debt has forced the county to use its
reserves to balance the budget.
