Teens Learn Options To Address Dating Abuse

Women's Center Hot Line Can Help Teens Seek Help

POSTED: 5:08 pm EDT October 26, 2008

An effort on Sunday to prevent teen dating abuse targeted teenage girls in abusive relationships.

The Prevention Program at the Squirrel Hill Jewish Community Center is educating teenagers and adults about the warning signs and what to do when they suspect abuse.

One tragic reminder arose in the remembrance of the death of Demi Cuccia, 16, last year. Police said she was stabbed and killed by her boyfriend in Monroeville last year.

"Teens (need to) observe these warning signs -- the rage, the jealousy, the obsessiveness, the 20 phone calls a day, the text messages from an unhealthy partner -- that they can talk to a trusted adult -- their friend, a parent, or a teacher, or a counselor, or call that hot line -- so that they can get some help," said Joanne Witkowski, an abuse survivor.

The hot line number for the Women's Center and Shelter is 412-687-8005.
