2007 WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. -- Kennywood Park is about to open its gates for the 2007 season. WTAE Channel 4 Action News got a sneak peek at some of the big changes, which include a new ride and healthier food.Cosmic Chaos swoops and swivels with up to 24 riders at a time, sitting in a motorcycle-looking seat. All riders are nestled in with electronic back supporters. The ride reaches 60 feet as it swings from side to side while a disk swivels, still carrying riders."You get some air time going up and then you feel like you're Superman," said Mark Atterson of Kennywood. "It's a flying kind of thing."In Kiddieland, Kennywood will have the new S.S. Kenny ride. It's similar to Cosmic Chaos, only not as crazy. There's also a new basketball game called Around the World, modeled after the NBA skills competition. Players shoot 12 balls and accumulate as many points as possible. Kennywood is also going healthy in some ways. cutting back on public smoking areas and scaling back from trans fat at some of the food stands."I don't think unhealthy is the right word for it. It's fun food like cotton candy, corn dogs, but one of the things we tried to do this year is give some healthy alternatives," said general manager Jerome Bibas.Kennywood will be open on Friday and Saturday, then closed until May 16, when it will be open daily for the season.
