Where Can You Park For Pittsburgh's July 4th Fireworks?

Plenty Of Downtown Garages Open; Watch Out For Mt. Washington Closures

UPDATED: 3:20 pm EDT June 30, 2009

While the familiar parking lots fill up downtown, there are plenty of other areas that could have empty spaces for Pittsburgh fireworks crowds on the Fourth of July.

Downtown garages are located at Third Avenue, PPG Place, Wood Street, Sixth Street, Fort Duquesne Boulevard and the Boulevard of the Allies. Park there and grab a cab or walk to Point State Park.

A new option this year is the Grant Street Transportation Center near the intersection of Grant Street and Liberty Avenue. Free parking will be allowed there on the 4th.

Combined, they offer more than 2,000 spots within walking distance of the cultural district, which isn't far from the Point.

You can also try the lots near PNC Park and Heinz Field, and then walk across the Roberto Clemente Bridge to downtown.

How about using the Station Square garage (entrance off Carson Street) and taking a river ferry to the Point?

Other parking options on the South Side are the public lots at 18th and Sidney streets, 1217 Carson St., 18th and Carson, and 19th and Carson.

For public transit, check the Port Authority bus and trolley schedules at www.PortAuthority.org.

The trolley takes riders to Station Square; to Gateway Center, just a block away from the entrance to Point State Park; and to the base of the Monongahela Incline, which takes you up Mount Washington for a perfect view of the fireworks.

Street Closures

If you are planning to park in Mount Washington during the fireworks show, there are a few things to keep in mind.

The Shiloh Parking Plaza on Virginia Avenue in Mount Washington has 72 spaces.

You won't be able to park on the north side of Grandview Avenue, at the corners or the curbs, or in front of people's driveways.

Police will be on patrol, and they are not afraid to ticket or tow.

Check back later this week to find specific road closure information from the Pittsburgh Police Bureau.
