Professor Wrestling: The 'Unbreakable' Recap

Styles, Raven, Naturals Big Winners

POSTED: 7:59 am EDT September 9, 2005

Listen up!

Class is in session.

Sunday night in Orlando, the crew from Total Nonstop Wrestling was back in pay-per-view mode with "Unbreakable," as Raven challeged Rhino for the NWA title!

In the following paragraphs, my thoughts on what should happen (if I were in charge) and what will happen (what I think the writers will do) and what actually did happen. It's that simple. Aren't you glad there's a goofy column like this to focus on fun? Well, you better be, or there's a flying folding chair in your immediate future. And stay away from the Spanish announcer's table.

Enough verbage, here's the stuff:

Challenge Match: Jeff Hardy vs. Bobby Roode
What Should Happen: Team Canada's Roode is a solid performer, but there's no need this close to the Spike TV switch (TNA debuts on that carrier in October) to bury Hardy. Be nice to your big names.

What Will Happen: The enigmatic Hardy wins with flair.

What Did Happen: The dastardly Jeff Jarrett clobbers Hardy with a hockey stick, pushes Jeff back into the ring, where Roode gets the sleazy win.

Challenge Match: Petey Williams vs. Chris Sabin
What Should Happen: Williams, also from the heelish Team Canada, takes on fellow X-Division star, Sabin. All I can promise is a great match because these two are as good as it gets. If I were booking things, I'd have Williams win so he can get back into the X-title hunt.

What Will Happen: Williams wins with a clean pin.

What Did Happen: Sabin slips by Williams with his finisher, the Cradle Shock.

Challenge Match: Monty Brown and Kip James vs. Apolo and Lance Hoyt
What Should Happen: TNA is trying to make a star out of Hoyt, so there's no shame in him getting the pin here. James, the former Billy Gunn in WWE, has the name recognition, but the promotion needs to build at least one fresh heavyweight babyface. That's Hoyt.

What Will Happen: Apolo and Hoyt with the upset win.

What Did Happen: Mr. Brown got the pin, then argued with his heel partner -- the former Mr. Gunn -- afterwards.

NWA Tag Team Title Match: America's Most Wanted vs. The Naturals (c) vs. Team Canada vs. Sean Waltman and Alex Shelley.
What Should Happen: I would put the belts on Waltman and Shelley. Waltman, who wrestled as Syxx and X-Pac in WCW and WWE is really the only person in the match with name recognition to a general audience. That's perfect for the big exposure headed TNA's way via Spike.

What Will Happen:I have the feeling the sneaky Team Canada will walk away with this.

What Did Happen:Waltman fails to show up for the pay-per-view! Naturals retain belts.

X-Division Championship Match: Christopher Daniels (c) vs. Samoa Joe vs. A.J. Styles
What Should Happen:I still don't get why the purists love Somoa Joe so much. He's no Daniels, and he's certainly no Styles -- the greatest wrestler on Earth right now. In this one, Daniels should retain his belt. It's time for Styles go jump into the NWA title mix again.

What Will Happen: Daniels takes it in an another X-Division classic.

What Did Happen: Styles gets his signature belt back in an absolute classic. Consider catching the replay of this ppv just for this match alone.

Challenge Match: Abyss vs. Sabu
What Should Happen: The monster versus the hardcore legend. Abyss -- a Mankind-like creature -- will have his hands full with Sabu, but I think he should win. Besides, Abyss has a really creepy associate named Jim Mitchell. He's really screechy and annoying, which I like in a heel manager.

What Will Happen: Abyss takes care of Sabu, no problem.

What Did Happen:
Abyss scatters a bunch of thumb tacks across the ring, slams Sabu on them -- gets the pin. Abyss wins.

NWA Championship Match: Raven (c) vs. Rhino
What Should Happen: Raven deserves to hang onto the belt against the big guy. Don't be surprised if Jeff Jarrett gets involved, "accidentally" costing his buddy Rhino the match.

What Will Happen: Raven retains as TNA goes all out to put on an entertaining main event.

What Did Happen: Jarrett tries to interfere, but is stopped by Jeff Hardy. Raven gets the pin and wins.

That's it. For the record, I got two right and five wrong. I'll be spending the rest of the day in the corner, dunce cap perched on my noggin.

One other point of business before I go. TNA has asked the Professor to put the word out that these pay-per-view shows -- as well as the weekly "Impact!" tapings -- are open free to the public. The promotion performs at Universal Studios in Orlando. Did you notice the key word earlier in this paragraph? FREE!

The next "Impact!" taping is Sept. 27 (the first Spike TV show), the next pay-per-view show is on Oct. 23. For more info, call the TNA hotline at 407-224-6000.

Hey, if you're vacationing down there, or live in the area, it's a good deal. And no, you don't have to pay a park admission to see the TNA show. It's a totally separate (free) deal.

OK, that's really it. Now scram! Class dismissed!
