There Goes The 'Neighborhood'

The following report on Fred Rogers was aired in January 2000 on WTAE-TV. A feature on Rogers aired on ABC's Nightline on July 13.

A true Pittsburgh original is saying goodbye after 33 years on the air.

The final episode of the long-running children's program "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" was taped on Monday and is scheduled to air sometime in February. Family Communications, Inc. agreed to release clips of the historic episode to WTAE-TV. Click on the link at left to watch them in RealVideo format.

Latrobe native Fred Rogers began hosting "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" in 1967 at the WQED television studios in Pittsburgh. Public Broadcasting Service began nationally distributing it the next year.

Rogers formed Family Communications in 1971 to produce the show. He serves as chairman of the nonprofit group.

Rogers, 71, said that he will focus on his Family Communications Web sites, publications and special programs with museums. PBS stations will continue airing "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" in reruns.

Rogers lives with his wife in Pittsburgh. They have two married sons and two grandsons, born in 1988 and 1993.
