2008 NORTH VERSAILLES, Pa. -- Porky Chedwick -- the "daddio of the radio" and the "platter-pushin' papa" -- is leaving the city where he has been a broadcasting legend.WKFB-AM aired a three-hour "porkfest" tribute on Friday in honor of Chedwick, the longtime oldies disc jockey, who's moving to Florida at age 90 after decades of working in Pittsburgh radio. A farewell party for Chedwick is planned to take place on Saturday at 8 p.m. until midnight at the White Oak American Legion on Constitution Boulevard. "You know Pittsburgh's my home," Chedwick said as he signed off for the final time. "Listen now -- it's later for the Porkulator. Right now, I'm gone."Chedwick began his career in 1948 at WHOD, which later became WAMO. He's known for helping to desegregate popular music by introducing African-American artists to a larger audience."These were artists who were singing about their life that never, ever had an opportunity of making a living with the talent they were blessed with, so I opened the doors," he said.Chedwick and his wife, Jeanie, aren't calling his move to Florida a retirement, saying that plans are in the works for a "Porky cruise" near their new home next summer.Chedwick also said he's looking at opportunities to do radio programs in Florida or create a new show for his many fans to enjoy."I loved them, they loved me, and it's something that words couldn't depict," he said. "It's just very, very emotional, very touching."
