Lawyer Denies Pro Wrestler Kurt Angle Failed DUI Test In Moon Twp.

Olympic Gold Medalist Arrested At Home After Witness Report

UPDATED: 7:40 pm EDT October 4, 2007

TNA pro wrestler and Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle was charged with driving under the influence and careless driving.

Police said they got calls about Angle's driving on Friday afternoon, after he left a bar and restaurant in Moon Township.

One driver claimed Angle's white Cadillac Escalade almost hit a car, police said.

"Kurt has no knowledge of this happening, he doesn't know anybody that was there, and he didn't even know anything had even occurred until police came knocking on his door an hour later, asking to interview him," attorney Mike Santicola said.

When police went to Angle's home, they said he showed signs of intoxication and they explained that someone had reported his erratic driving.

Police said they smelled alcohol and gave Angle a field sobriety test, which they said he failed.

Santicola disputed the police account of the field test.

"We respectfully disagree with the police's opinion that he failed. In fact, we have independent witnesses that state Kurt did very well on the test," Santicola said.

Also, Santicola said Angle was allowed to call his agent during the incident -- something the lawyer said he's never heard of happening before -- and Angle was advised over the phone not to submit to a blood test.

"They (police) had no firsthand knowledge of him operating the vehicle, and they didn't have any evidence of him operating the vehicle while intoxicated," Santicola said.

The allegation that Angle failed a field test "is going to be their whole case, because they don't have anything else, so they have to tell him that he failed," Santicola said.

A date for Angle's preliminary hearing has not been set.
