Professor Wrestling: 'Bound For Glory' Results

Sting, Sabin, LAX Shine

POSTED: 9:22 pm EDT October 18, 2006

Listen up!

Class is in session.

From Detroit Sunday night, arguably the biggest pay-per-view in TNA's history. It was called "Bound For Glory," as the Total Nonstop Action crew left the friendly confines of Orlando for a bona-fide road show!

In the main event, new signee Kurt Angle got in the mix as the guest referee. If you missed it, check out the Angle interview right here. If you haven't listened to my "Old School, New School" podcast yet, that's right here.

As for my "BFG" predictions, they're right here:

Loser Gets Fired Match: Larry Zbysko vs. Eric Young
What Should Happen: Zbysko is basically in Jerry Lawler shape for this match. He's a legend who has seen better days. Young, a former Team Canada heel-turned-doofus-babyface will carry the match, which I'm hoping is relatively short. What should happen? A victory for Mr. Z., who still does a dynamite job on the mic. Young can go away for a while, if that's where they're really going with this.

What Will Happen: Larry will win.

What Did Happen: Young used Larry's own foreign object against him, and won. The Z-man is presumably fired. If so, bad move.

Monsters Ball : Samoa Joe vs. Raven vs. Abyss vs. Brother Runt
What Should Happen: Someone has to explain to me why Samoa Joe is in this match as opposed to being in a match to name the No. 1 contender for the NWA title. While I can appreciate the work of the other three contestants in this contest, Joe should get the victory just to keep him at unbeaten monster status.

What Will Happen: If Joe doesn't win, I'll do my kids' chores for a week.

What Did Happen: Joe pinned Raven for the victory. That means Professor Jr. will still be takin' out the trash and Professor Juniorette will be doin' the dishes. Never in doubt.

8-Mile Street Fight: Rhino vs. Christian Cage
What Should Happen: Rhino was ticked at Cage for turning heel, and the two started a feud. Rhino shouldn't be mad, however, because Cage is a much better character when he's playing a bad guy. It doesn't matter who wins here, as long as Cage stays nasty.

What Will Happen: Cage will take this one.

What Did Happen: Cage pinned Rhino after the pair beat the heck out each other for 15 minutes.

Steel Cage NWA Tag Team Title Match: A.J. Styles (c) and Christopher Daniels vs. Latin American Exchange
What Should Happen
Each team has beaten each other in the past two pay-per-views. This is the rubber match, and while I'd like Styles and Daniels to retain, TNA has got to do something to bring tag wrestling back to prominence in this country. That means LAX should win. Styles and Daniels are better singles wrestlers, and should go back to it. LAX, led by their great heel manager Konnan, can rejuvenate the tag division. Giving meaning to the tag belts -- something WWE refuses to do -- is within reach. I'd start with an LAX/ Team 3D match at the next TNA pay-per-view.

What Will Happen: LAX will win it with a little help from their manager.

What Did Happen: LAX -- with a little help from Konnan -- got the victory and the NWA tag belts, as Styles was pinned in the end.

X-Divsion Championship Match: Senshi (c) vs. Chris Sabin
What Should Happen: This one pits a vanilla champion, Senshi, versus a "Jackass" disciple. I know movie companies buy commercial time on these wrestling shows, but could we tone down the phony tie-ins, please? Is it so hard for the advertisers to stay out of the storylines? By the way, what happened to the once-proud X-Division? Not only do I not know any of these people, but I don't care who wins. And that's not my fault.

What Will Happen: Sabin will win cleanly, in what I hope will be a good match. Both performers are certainly cabable in the ring. The X-Division sets TNA apart from everyone else. One of these days it would be nice to see the promotion take better care of it.

What Did Happen: Sabin wins a teriffic match, capturing the X-Divsion belt. Nice job.

NWA World Heavyweight Championship: Jeff Jarrett (c) vs.Sting
What Should Happen: Here, the great Kurt Angle is guest referee, as he makes his TNA pay-per-view debut. If Sting loses, he'll be forced to retire. Angle is supposed to keep order in the ring, but I doubt we'll see that. And really, we shouldn't. Angle is now TNA's biggest star and has to be a factor in this match, whatever that may be.

What Will Happen: I see Jarrett winning somehow, with interference from Christian Cage and Samoa Joe.

What Did Happen: Angle called it down the middle, and in the end Sting made Jarrett tap out to capture the NWA title.

That's it. For the night, I had four matches right, two wrong. That's excellent prognosticating, kids. And no, don't use that $50 word in school today. You're too young. As for Angle, he and Samoa Joe mixed it up during the show. They're on a collission course in what should be a great series of matches. If you haven't read the Kurt Angle interview, it's right here. Part two of that extravaganza is scheduled to run this Friday. And don't forget to listen to our new weekly podcast "Old, School, New School." Download the latest episode right here!

Now scram. Class dismissed!
