A man who plays Santa Claus and operates a holiday toy train ride at Clearview Mall in Center Township, Butler County, was attacked while leaving the building Saturday night, state police said.

Matt MacDonald, 23, of Butler, told police he was held at knifepoint shortly after 10 p.m. by a man who stole two bank deposit bags containing $700 cash from that day's train rides.

"I didn't see where he came from," MacDonald said. "He was on my right and he demanded the money. He already grabbed onto the money while I was holding it."

State police said the assailant was described as white, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt and a black scarf.

"I fought with him for a few seconds to keep him from getting the money, but that's when I realized he had the knife, so I let it go and I said, 'OK, just don't hurt me,'" MacDonald said.
