GAME NOTES: Purdue will look to ride its winning streak right through Madison, as the Boilermakers battle the Wisconsin Badgers this Saturday afternoon in a Big Ten showdown at Camp Randall Stadium. After their impressive 26-18 victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Boilermakers did not have a let down performance against Illinois this past weekend, as Purdue defeated the Fighting Illini, 24-14. It was the second straight win for the Boilermakers, who lost five straight matchups prior to the win over Ohio State. As for the Badgers, they opened the year with five straight wins, but since then the team has suffered back-to-back losses. The last time Wisconsin was in action the team was defeated by Iowa, 20-10. It was the first home loss on the year for Wisconsin, and it also dropped the team to 2-2 in Big Ten play. The Badgers hold a comfortable, 40-29-8 edge over Purdue in the all-time series, and that includes a three-game winning streak for Wisconsin. The Boilermakers possess a very balanced offensive attack, and that has helped Purdue post a respectable 27.6 ppg. The ground game, which is churning out 146.4 ypg, is being led by Ralph Bolden, who has rumbled for 720 yards and five touchdowns on the year. Quarterback Joey Elliott has contributed 220 rushing yards and three scores on the ground, but the signal caller has been even more impressive with his arm. In eight games, Elliott has completed 60.6 percent of his throws and currently has 2,022 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, but he has also tossed 10 interceptions. Keith Smith and Aaron Valentin have been the top two targets for Elliott this season, as Smith is leading the team with 59 receptions and 771 yards, while Valentin has hauled in a team-best seven touchdown. In the team's recent matchup against Illinois, the Boilermakers used a heavy dose of their ground game, running right through the Fighting Illini for 220 yards. Bolden paced the team with 78 yards and one score, while Jaycen Taylor added 71 yards and one touchdown. Elliott, only threw for 166 yards in the win, but did rush for 62 yards and one touchdown. The Purdue defense however, has not been very helpful on the year, as the unit is surrendering 26.9 ppg. The team is allowing 204.6 passing yards per matchup, but the real issue for Purdue has been its inability to stop the run, as teams are gashing this defense for 156.2 ypg on the ground, and out of the 24 touchdowns surrendered by the Boilermakers, 18 have come via the run. Taking some of the pressure off this unit has been its ability to make big plays throughout the year, as the defense has collected 17 takeaways and 21 sacks. In the recent matchup against Illinois, the Boilermakers were pounded for 180 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, but still managed to grab a win. Overall, the defense held the Illini to just 322 total yards, and just 4-of-14 on critical third downs. The Badgers have had their way with the opposition for the most part this season, and come into this contest averaging 28.3 ppg. The ground game, which is punishing opponents for 184.4 ypg, has been led by John Clay, who currently has 716 yards and seven touchdowns for Wisconsin. However, Clay is listed as questionable with a sprained ankle. The rushing attack is clearly the bread and butter for this unit, but not to be overlooked is quarterback Scott Tolzien, who at times has put forth some solid efforts. Tolzien has completed 63.6 percent of his throws thus far, but has just 1,436 passing yards and nine touchdowns against eight interceptions. Surprisingly the last time Wisconsin was on the field the team was completely shut down by Iowa. The Badgers totaled just 230 yards, and the ground game was bottled up for just 87 yards on 2.6 yards per attempt. Clay finished with 75 yards on 21 carries, while Montee Ball scored the team's lone touchdown. Unfortunately Tolzien was even worse. In fact, the quarterback could have had one of his worst performances of the year, as he finished with just 143 yards, and was intercepted three times and sacked on four different occasions. Wisconsin's play defensively has not been extraordinary, but the unit has done enough to keep the Badgers in most games. Wisconsin is currently allowing 24.9 ppg, but opponents are averaging just 326.0 total ypg. The Badgers have done well against the run, holding teams to just 114.6 ypg on the ground, but defending the pass has been a different story, as the team is allowing 211.4 ypg through the air, and out of the 17 touchdowns surrendered by this team 11 have come via the pass. The team has been able to rely on the big plays however, as the Badgers come into this weekend with nine interceptions and eight fumble recoveries. The defense played pretty well against Iowa this past weekend, holding the Hawkeyes to just 20 points on 283 total yards of production. Even though the team was defeated, the Badgers shut down Iowa's ground game to just 65 yards on 1.7 yards per attempt, but struggled against the pass, allowing 218 yards and one score through the air. Purdue has been playing extremely well of late, but look for their two-game win streak to come to an end. The Badgers should regain their composer and return to the win column in front of a hungry home crowd. Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Wisconsin 24, Purdue 17Saturday, October 31st, 12:00 p.m. (et)
