Pitt Women Celebrate NCAA Bid

POSTED: 10:46 am EDT March 18, 2008

The University of Pittsburgh is going to the NCAA women's basketball tournament for the second year in a row.

On Monday night, coach Agnus Berenato and the Panthers learned that they are seeded No. 6 in the Spokane region and will play No. 11 Wyoming in the first round of the tournament.

"We were anxious," said Shavonte Zellous, Pitt's leading scorer at 18 points per game. "We thought we were going to the Greensboro region, but it just so happened we were in the last region (to be announced) once again this year, so it was kind of anxious, and we're just excited for our season."

Pitt (22-10, 10-6 Big East) and Wyoming (24-6, 12-4 Mountain West) are scheduled to tip off 30 minutes after the Baylor-Fresno State game at the University of New Mexico Arena in Albuquerque on Saturday afternoon.

"Really excited about it," Berenato said. "I think it's a lot of hard work that paid off for my staff and our team. I'm excited for the seniors -- Mallorie (Winn), Karlyle (Lim) and Marcedes (Walker)."

Pittsburgh's last game was a 27-point loss to No. 1-seeded Connecticut in the Big East Conference tournament semifinals. Pitt finished its regular season by losing five of its final seven games.

Wyoming had a strong regular season, but were upset by San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament.

This will be Wyoming's first-ever NCAA tournament appearance -- and while it's not exactly a home game, the drive to Albuquerque isn't a long one for fans who want to cheer the Cowgirls on against the Panthers.

"There's some happy players who've been rewarded for a difficult season," Wyoming coach Joe Legerski said. "Now we've got to change gears and start working toward something."

Wyoming's leading scorers are Hanna Zavecz, at 14 points per game, and Justyna Podziemska, with 13.
