Penn State's Devlin To Transfer

POSTED: 9:49 pm EST December 10, 2008

(Sports Network) - Penn State quarterback Pat Devlin is planning on transferring to another school and will not participate with the team in the Rose Bowl against Southern California.

It's unclear where the redshirt sophomore will transfer, but he could transfer to the Football Championship Subdivision, where he would be eligible to play the following season. Divison-IA transfers, by rules, must sit out one year before being eligible to play for their new team.

The school released a statement saying Devlin informed coach Joe Paterno of his intention to transfer.

The highly-touted Devlin was the fifth-highest ranked quarterback coming out of high school in 2006, according to Rivals.com. With scholarship offers to Miami-Florida, Michigan, Virginia, and Pittsburgh, among others, Devlin was regarded as one of the most sought out quarterbacks to come out of high school in his class.

Devlin, who competed for the Nittany Lions' starting quarterback job prior to the 2008 season, lost the battle to redshirt junior Daryll Clark, who started every game this year.

While seeing action in 10 contests this season, Devlin was 25-of-47 with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Most notably, he replaced an injured Clark in the fourth quarter against Ohio State, leading the Nittany Lions down field and eventually running in the game-winning touchdown, giving Penn State their first win in Columbus in 30 years.
