Flyers Face Mountaineers In Minneapolis

POSTED: 10:43 am EDT March 20, 2009

(Sports Network) - The 11th-seeded Dayton Flyers mix it up with the sixth-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers in today's NCAA Tournament Midwest Region first-round battle at the Metrodome. The team that survives this bout will advance to the second round on Sunday versus either Kansas or North Dakota State.

The Flyers have posted 26 points wins on the season, including upsets of Marquette and Xavier, helping them earn an at-large bid to their first NCAA Tournament since 2004. Dayton holds a 13-15 all-time record in 13 prior appearances in this event and it has advanced to the regional semifinals on six difference occasions.

As for WVU, it too earned an at-large big to the NCAA Tournament thanks to 23 overall wins and 12 total in the powerful Big East. The Mountaineers are making their 22nd appearance in the NCAA Championship and they own a 20-21 record in this event. WVU has fared well in its recent appearances, reaching the Sweet 16 in each of its past four showings.

With respect to the all-time series, Dayton holds a 2-1 edge over WVU, but the teams haven't met since 1997.

The Flyers are known for their sound defense and rebounding, as they are limiting opponents to just 39.6 percent shooting from the floor, while outrebounding them by 5.3 rpg. Chris Wright has played a big part in that success, leading Dayton in scoring (12.9 ppg), rebounding (6.5 rpg) and blocks (39). Marcus Johnson is the only other player on the roster currently averaging in double figures, with 12.2 ppg, and he is the team's top three- point option, hitting at a 36.8 percent rate. Dayton, a deep and balanced club, also gets consistent contributions form Charles Little, who delivers 8.0 ppg and 4.0 rpg.

The Mountaineers are a team than can match Dayton's success on defense and the glass, as they are holding foes to just 61.6 ppg and grabbing 5.9 rpg more than challengers. Offensively though, WVU has a few more prolific weapons and the team is paced by Da'Sean Butler, who turns in 17.3 ppg, to go with 6.0 rpg. Alex Ruoff is another solid scorer at 15.9 ppg and he is a terrific three-point shooter, knocking down 37.5 percent of his attempts. Freshman Devin Ebanks flourished down the stretch and he averages 10.4 ppg and a team- high 7.7 rpg. He posted eight double-doubles and has shown the ability to take over a game from time to time.
