South Florida (9-20) At Rutgers (10-20)
GAME NOTES: Two of the worst teams in the Big East Conference will collide this afternoon, as the Rutgers Scarlet Knights play host to the South Florida Bulls. It has been a long season for the Bulls, who have captured just nine wins. Surprisingly, one of those victories came in the team's recent matchup against Cincinnati, as the Bulls defeated the Bearcats in a 70-59 final. It was just the fourth league win for USF, and also snapped the team's six-game losing streak. As for the Scarlet Knights, they enter this game hoping to put the brakes on an eight-game slide. The most recent setback, a 70-40 verdict against Syracuse, dropped RU to a pathetic 1-16 in Big East play. The Scarlet Knights have a 4-2 edge in the all-time series, but last year it was South Florida that grabbed victories in both matchups.
With this being the last game of the season for South Florida, it is evident that the Bulls have struggled offensively this year, netting just 59.8 ppg while shooting a mere 40.1 percent from floor. The only true scoring threat on the roster is Dominique Jones, who is averaging 18.5 ppg, to go along with a team-high 5.5 rpg. Jones also has dished out 114 assists and has a team-high 40 steals. Surprisingly the last time the Bulls took the floor they picked up an 11-point win over Cincinnati. USF shot 46.9 percent from the floor in the win, and was paced by Jones, who exploded for 30 points while also contributing eight rebounds and five assists. Augustus Gilchrist and Alex Rivas added 13 and 10 points, respectively, while Chris Howard distributed 10 assists.
The Scarlet Knights have also found it difficult to produce at a high level offensively, as the team is netting just 64.2 ppg. Mike Rosario has been the only consistent scoring option for Rutgers, as the guard is posting 16.8 ppg. Rutgers's poor play offensively continued in the team's recent 30-point loss to Syracuse The Scarlet Knights shot just 25.4 percent from the floor in the contest, and made just 4-of-24 attempts from long range. Rosario led the way with 16 points in the contest, while Hamady Ndiaye added eight points and nine rebounds.
Neither team has performed well this season, that is evident, but the Bulls have been slightly better and should be able to grab a victory on the road this afternoon.
