Memphis Gets Commitment From Prep Star Evans

POSTED: 3:52 pm EDT April 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - Tyreke Evans, the top unsigned high school basketball player in the class of 2008, announced Wednesday afternoon that he will attend the University of Memphis.

Evans, a 6-foot-5 guard from the Philadelphia suburb of Chester, held a press conference at his high school, American Christian Academy, with his family on hand. The only unsigned consensus top 15 player left in the nation, Evans had narrowed his choices to Memphis, Texas, and local suitor Villanova.

"Hopefully Coach (John Calipari) will get me ready to go the next level and be successful in the NBA," Evans said. "I'm happy to get this (decision) off my chest."

Memphis lands Evans just one day after freshman point guard Derrick Rose, who helped lead the Tigers to a 38-2 record and the National Championship game, announced his intention to forego his final three years and enter the NBA Draft.

Calipari's team will lose senior forward Joey Dorsey to graduation, and could see First Team All-American guard Chris Douglas-Roberts declare early for the draft in the coming weeks as well.
