Knight To Be Inducted Into IU Hall Of Fame

POSTED: 2:16 pm EDT August 22, 2009

(Sports Network) - Legendary former Indiana University basketball coach Bob Knight will headline the 2009 class to be inducted in the school's athletics Hall of Fame.

Enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991, Knight won three NCAA titles in his 29 seasons (1971-2000) at Indiana and is the winningest men's college basketball coach of all-time with a record of 902-371.

Knight also had coaching stints with Army and Texas Tech, but his most notable years came at Indiana. His Hoosiers teams went 662-239 and won NCAA titles in 1976 -- when they went 32-0 -- 1981 and 1987. They also won 11 Big Ten championships, a conference record, under Knight.

"I am honored to have been a part of selecting this outstanding class of tremendous coaches and student-athletes," said athletics director Fred Glass. "For my first Hall of Fame class to include heroes from my childhood as well as my student days is a dream come true."

The announcement comes nearly nine years after the at-times volatile Knight was fired by Indiana in 2000, after he allegedly grabbed a student who greeted him in what Knight considered a disrespectful manner at Assembly Hall.

Earlier that year, then-Indiana president Myles Brand, currently the NCAA's president, announced he was adopting a "zero tolerance" approach to Knight's behavior. The zero tolerance policy was put in place after a former player alleged Knight had choked him during practice.

Following being fired by Indiana, Knight took the head coaching job at Texas Tech in 2001 and remained there until he resigned in February 2008.

Knight picked up his 900th career victory on January 16, 2008, in the Red Raiders' win over Texas A&M.

Other inductees including legendary IU men's soccer coach Jerry Yeagley, the all-time NCAA leader in wins (544-101-45) who led his Indiana teams to six national titles; Steve Downing (men's basketball, 1970-73), Katrin Koch (women's track and field, 1989-92), Joe Norman (football, 1975-78), the late Mike Rabold (football, 1956-58), and Alan Somers (swimming, 1961-63).
