Lone Star State Foes Clash In Austin

POSTED: 10:38 am EST December 15, 2007

(Sports Network) - The fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns get back to work following a week layoff for finals, as they welcome the Texas State Bobcats to Austin for a Lone Star State showdown.

The Longhorns entered the week as one of 15 Division I teams still undefeated on the year and are off to a 9-0 start for the first time since the 1981-82 season. With the exception of a two-point victory over Pac-10 powerhouse UCLA, Texas has posted double-digit wins over all other eight opponents this year. That includes an 80-54 rout of Rice last weekend.

The Bobcats have dropped two straight games to fall to 5-3 on the young season. Texas State will be playing its second straight ranked opponent, after falling hard at Texas A&M last weekend, 109-73.

This is the 42nd all-time meeting between these two teams, with Texas holding a significant 36-5 advantage. The Longhorns have won 18 straight over the Bobcats, with Texas State's last victory over UT coming way back in 1937.

Dylan Moseley came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points, but he was the only real bright spot in an otherwise dreary performance for Texas State in College Station last week. The team as a whole shot just .333 from the floor and turned the ball over 17 costly times. The Bobcats were also abused on the boards (50-37) and outscored in the paint, 62-20. The offensive numbers on the season are a bit deceiving. Texas State is averaging a robust 87.2 ppg, despite shooting a mediocre .421 from the floor. The team is doing a good job in forcing 20.8 turnovers per game, but it is nearly a wash considering the Bobcats commit 19 miscues per outing themselves. Brandon Bush has been the team's top scorer and rebounder this year, averaging 15.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Brent Benson is the only other player currently averaging double digits, coming off the bench with 13.5 ppg.

Texas is simply getting it done in every facet of the game this year. The Longhorns are enjoying a +23.9 scoring margin, a +4.4 rebounding edge and are forcing 16.3 turnovers per game. Offensively, the team is shooting a scorching .537 from the floor (fourth nationally), including .468 from three-point range (second nationally). The result is a hefty 84.3 ppg (14th nationally). Guards A.J. Abrams and D.J. Augustin may just comprise the top backcourt duo in the country. Abrams is shooting .516 from the floor and .444 from long range to lead the team with 19.1 ppg. Augustin is hitting 55 percent of his shots, 48.8 percent from long range and adds 19.0 ppg, all while doling out a team-high 7.0 apg. The pair have combined for 52 of the team's 80 three-pointers to date. Damion James (12.4 ppg, 9.6 rpg) and Connor Atchley (11.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg) provide frontcourt balance, while guard Justin Mason (10.1 ppg) rounds out a potent starting five. In the big win over Rice last week, James posted his fourth straight double-double, finishing with 18 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Augustin and Abrams also tallied 18 points apiece, while Augustin doled out seven assists without a turnover.
