Looking to save money on gas? Call 4 Action reporter Meghan Jones says low-rolling resistance tires are designed to promote fuel efficiency."They were built to get better fuel mileage, and the manufacturers meet the average mileage for the fleet," mechanic Charlie Van Wormer said. But drivers may not be getting the full mileage advantage of the tire.
"They're not told when they buy them that they are the new rolling resistance tires that take 44 PSI, and they are going by the old sticker on the door that says cold pressure 30, hot pressure 35," Van Wormer said.Stickers on car doors are not being updated to reflect the air pressure demands of the new tires, Jones said. Drivers should look on the tire's side wall to see what pressure the nanufacturer recommends.Tires without enough air can reduce a car's fuel efficiency by 10 percent, Jones said."If you don't have enough air in it, in layman's terms, the tire will sag and that steel belt will not be efficient," salesman Dewey Carlisle said. "There's more rolling resistance in the tire."If you don't know whether your car has this type of fuel-efficient tire, ask your mechanic.Gas Gauge: Local Gas Prices, Gas Calculator
