Call 4 Action: Gorilla Glue WarningUPDATED: 5:54 pm EST December 29, 2003 Gorilla Glue -- it's something you may have in your home right now. When used properly, it can hold just about anything together. But if it gets into the wrong hands, there's a danger that goes beyond any normal glue. The following special report by Call 4 Action reporter Susan Koeppen aired Nov. 7 on Channel 4 Action News and was repeated Dec. 29. Clancy, the shetland sheep dog, got a little adventurous. Inside the garage, she found some glue in a bag on the floor and started to eat. It was a bottle of Gorilla Glue.Alexis Weldon, dog owner: "Four vet visits and $1,500 later, she was finally relieved of what looked like a Nerf ball from her stomach."The Gorilla Glue eaten by Clancy expanded in her stomach, causing a complete blockage. She is doing fine now. But without surgery, she probably would not have survived. The warning on Gorilla Glue says "keep out of reach of children and animals, harmful or fatal if swallowed."Gorilla Glue is polyurethane-based, so it's meant to work with water. That's what makes it powerful.Dr. Ed Krenzelok, Pittsburgh Poison Center: "What happens is Gorilla Glue expands three to four to 10 times its size."Ten minutes after adding water, the glue already starts to expand. Almost 24 hours later, the glue is so hard that it can be hit with a hammer. When Clancy ate the glue, the moisture inside her body worked just like the water and activated the glue.Krenzelok: "A child that, for whatever reason, drinks several ounces would be at risk of having an obstruction."Gorilla Glue and water are meant to go hand in hand. But sometimes, it can be a dangerous and possibly deadly combination. The company that makes Gorilla Glue thanked Action News for this report. It wants consumers to know about the danger. There have been reported cases nationwide of pets getting into Gorilla Glue and needing surgery to get it out.The company says it has no reports of humans getting sick.
