Call 4 Action: Picture Passwords

When you're on the Web, it might be easier than you think for people to find your name and password.

WTAE Call 4 Action reporter Susan Koeppen says one of the problems is that most people use passwords that are too easy for others to figure out.

"If you have the same password for your bank and your e-mail, that's a problem," said CMU's Adrian Perrig. "They can get it and try it with your bank. If it matches, they can get into your bank account."

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University are working on a way to use facial features as passwords instead of the traditional letters and numbers.

"Passwords can be hacked, you can forget a password. Now, your password is your face," said CMU's Marios Savvides.

A picture password would make it very difficult for someone to pretend to be another person.

The technology could also be used at automated teller machines, so thieves wouldn't be able to steal personal identification numbers (PINs), and on airplanes, so pilots would have to prove their identities before entering the cockpit.

Picture passwords may seem strange, but CMU researchers found that most people who tested them were able to remember them better than a normal password of numbers and letters.

To make a more secure password, experts recommend using a combination of letters (both lower- and uppercase), numbers, commas and periods.
