With Friday's digital TV transition looming, now may be the right time to skip buying a converter box and opt for a brand new TV.

While not everyone needs to buy a new TV before the switch -- cable, satellite and digital converter box users will be fine -- Consumer Reports has released its list of top bargains, with many of the latest high definition sets being better and less expensive.

According to Consumer Reports, of the 35 HDTVs it tested, all but two received a "very good" or "excellent" rating for picture quality.

"Oh, I think they're missing a fantastic, fantastic picture," said WTAE's Director of Engineering David Kasperek.

The New York Times also reports that many of the leading brands have slashed prices on their 40-inch LCD sets by nearly one-third in the last year.

For those looking for a big HDTV -- 46 to 47 inches -- the top Consumer Reports ratings went to Sony and Samsung, but said the best bargain was a Toshiba.

For 40 to 42-inch sets, the best scores went to Toshiba and Samsung, with JVC taking the award for best bargain.

For smaller, 32-inch LCD sets, Consumer Reports gives the nod to Panasonic and JVC, both of which are similar in price.

With a HDTV, viewers can pick up local digital and HD stations with just an antenna.

Those with an older analog TV will need a converter box and antenna unless they have cable or a satellite dish.

With either set, experts say the old rabbit ears don't always work that well.

Ideally, TV watchers should consider and outdoor antenna or one than be run through the attic.

"If possible, it should be pointed toward a window or something like that so you get plenty of signal to the antenna," said Kasperek.
