HiTEC (Histrionic Thought Experiment Cooperative) is an independent experimental orchestra founded in July of 2008 as an attempt to create a Low Classical alternative to those who worship at the temple of the fictitious and propagandistic "Golden Age" that's often used to justify the "Divine Rights" of cash-flow.

Unlike most (M)USICAL projects, the playing of this group revolves around THINKING about particular things while playing in a very open-ended way RATHER THAN necessarily playing specified physical actions.

HiTEC, Histrionic Thought Experiment Cooperative is an independent orchestra of 22 people founded by tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE. It turns classic Thought Experiments such as the "Infinite Monkey Theorem" into sound waves before the very eyes & ears of its (v)audience.

AUDITIONS WILL BE HELD ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 23, 2009 AT 10 A.M.

CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, the most fantasmagorical Broadway musical in the history of everything, is searching for six children in the Greater Pittsburgh area to make their stage debut with CHITTY at the Benedum Center! CHITTY arrives in Pittsburgh on Tuesday, March 10, 2009, for an eight-performance engagement through Sunday, March 15, 2009, as part of the PNC Broadway Across America – Pittsburgh series, presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Pittsburgh Symphony and Broadway Across America.

Auditions will begin promptly at 10 a.m. in the Benedum Center rehearsal studios located at 719 Liberty Avenue on Friday, January 23, 2009. Auditioning children are to arrive no later than 9:30 a.m. accompanied by a parent or guardian to sign-up for the audition. Auditions will be limited to the first 150 registrants. Each child will be asked to sing a cappella 16 bars from one up-tempo song of choice. Children should be prepared to learn and execute simple choreography as part of the audition process. No decisions will be announced at any time during the auditions.

Six children will be selected for the ensemble, and they will appear as orphans in Act 2 of every performance. Two alternates will also be chosen. Approximate ages should be between 8 and 12 years old – and have the appearance of children, NOT young adults. Professional experience and headshots are not required.

The local children cast in the production and their parents or guardians will be provided rehearsal and performance information. The children will not receive any compensation, however this is a wonderful opportunity for children from Pittsburgh to perform onstage with professional actors without having to ever leave town.

Television Recycle Event Coincides with Digital Switchover

WHO: A partnership between the Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC), Waste Management, and the City of Pittsburgh
WHAT: Recycling Collection Event for Television Sets
WHEN: Saturday, February 21st 2009 from 10am to 2pm
WHERE: City of Pittsburgh Environmental Services Facility (3001 Railroad Street, Pittsburgh, Pa 15201) and Construction Junction (214 North Lexington Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15208)

DETAILS: - PRC is kicking off the new year with the Don’t Trash Your TV! Event. This television recycling collection event will take place on February 21st 2009 from 10am to 2pm and will be held at two locations – Construction Junction and the City of Pittsburgh’s Environmental Services Facility. With the upcoming digital switchover looming, more and more people are trading in their old TVs for new ones and PRC wants to ensure that the public has an environmentally and socially responsible method to dispose of their old TVs.

In 2008 the EPA estimated that 23.9 million Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) TVs were disposed of by Americans. With only 15-17% of these TVs being recycled – that left almost 590,000 to 605,000tons of TV waste entering our landfills! In order to improve these numbers, PRC is hoping that more residents will recycle their TVs instead of putting them out for the trash. TVs have many different toxic materials in them, including 4 to 8 pounds of lead, cadmium, flame retardants, and PVC plastics. These materials can leach into our groundwater and soil if not disposed of properly.

PRC will be working with local electronics recycler E loop llc (www.eloopllc.com) to recycle the TVs. During this event we will also be charging a reduced price for TV recycling due to a generous grant from Waste Management that will offset some of the recycling cost to the public.

The price structure is as follows:

TVs 19” & smaller $10 each
TVs 20” – 29” $20 each
TVs 30” – 39” $25 each
TVs 40” & larger $35 each

Check out www.prc.org for more information and associated fees, or call Sarah at 412.488.7490 ext. 236 or email at saraha@ccicenter.org.

The 32nd Annual Glass & Pottery Show & Sale

A shimmering rainbow of color and form will greet visitors to the Three Rivers Depression-Era Glass Society’s 32nd annual Glass and Pottery Show and Sale at the Clarion Hotel in New Kensington, PA on March 7 & 8, 2009. Twenty-seven dealers from the Tri-State area and beyond will be displaying Depression-Era Glass and Pottery, elegant Art Glass, Fiestaware and Mid-Century Modern Glassware on more than 120 tables.

The Show opens with a special preview on Saturday, March 7 at 10AM with a $7 admission fee. Regular public hours are from 12 noon to 5PM on Saturday and from 11AM to 4PM on Sunday, March 2 with a $5 admission fee. The fee is good for unlimited attendance over the two-day Show period.

Free Glass Identification will be featured from 1 to 3PM on Sunday afternoon. This free identification service by experts is limited to two items per attendee. This is the chance to learn more about that glassware you may have inherited from grandma!

This year’s special display will showcase American Barware made from the 1920s to the 1970s. Ranging from elaborate cocktail shaker sets of the post-Prohibition era to the casual cool stemware of the 1950s, you will be amazed at the diversity and beauty of these uniquely American forms.

This Show offers something for everyone. Collectors from as far away as Canada and Tennessee attend to search for additional rare pieces. Many people come to admire the beauty and learn the history of objects created by their ancestors who labored in Pittsburgh area glass factories. Everyone enjoys the hourly door prizes!

A list of the major glass companies of the era whose wares will be represented at the Show includes: Anchor Hocking, Cambridge, Consolidated, Duncan Miller, Federal, Fenton, Fostoria, Hazel-Atlas, Heisey, Imperial, Jeannette, McKee, Morgantown, New Martinsville, Paden City, Phoenix, Tiffin, U.S. Glass and Westmoreland.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the availability of large quantities of natural gas and the convenience of river transportation made the Tri-State region the world leader in glass tableware production. Today, the Three Rivers Depression-Era Glass Society attempts to foster an appreciation of this glass and preserve the history of the glass companies and the workers who made it. Proceeds from the Show are used to support area glass museums and exhibits in facilities such as the John Heinz Regional History Center and the West Virginia Museum of American Glass.

The Clarion Hotel is located at 300 Tarentum Bridge Road in New Kensington. For more information about the Show, please contact Jim Leasure, Show Chairman 412-217-2083 leasure@earthlink.net.

The Three Rivers Depression-Era Glass Society was organized in 1976. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at Peter’s Place Restaurant. Each meeting features a program about a specific glass company or some other aspect of 20th century American glassware. Guests are always welcome. Rethinking "Church" Where did we go wrong? How did we make it so complicated? What is church really supposed to be like? Our goal and our commitment for the Bridge Worship Gathering at Westminster Presbyterian Church is to be a relevant worship experience that celebrates the past, recognizes the present, and keeps an eye on the future. We strive to model the early church in the Book of Acts and adhere to the Great Commission and the Great Commandment. If you're looking for a place where you can connect with others, (Fellowship), grow in your understanding of the Bible (Discipleship), find a place to use the gifts God has gifted you with (Ministry), be able to serve and share your faith confidently with others (Mission), and sing praises to God with all you heart, soul and mind (Worship), then the Bridge Worship Gathering is the place for you. We're all at different places on the journey and we invite you to join in right where you are. We meet every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in the gym at Westminster Church in Upper St. Clair. Look for the signs. We'll save you a seat.
