High Winds Throughout Pittsburgh Knock Out Power, Split TreeThousands Without Electricity In Allegheny, Butler CountiesPOSTED: 8:27 am EDT October 7,
2009 PITTSBURGH -- A National Weather Service wind advisory was issued in counties throughout the greater Pittsburgh area on Wednesday morning, as gusts brought down power lines and knocked out electricity service. The winds are also blamed for splitting a tree in Bloomfield and sending it flying onto a nearby home. The tree partially crushed the awning above the home's front porch on South Mathilda Street. No one was injured in the incident, but neighbors said they were startled by the noise."It must have hit our building first, because it shook the whole building. Then, I started looking around. I seen the tree on the neighbor's house," said Chris Myers, who lives in the area.Building inspectors said the home is still structurally sound. In Oakland, high winds knocked down a power line on Dawson Street, which then knocked out power to nearby traffic lights, including the busy intersection at the Boulevard of the Allies and Bates Street.VIDEO - See The Damage In Bloomfield, OaklandAccording to Allegheny Power, less than 1,000 people in the Pittsburgh area -- mainly in Butler County -- are still without power. At one point, Duquesne Light reported 3,000 people lost power due to the high winds. The company said most of those customers were in the Oakland and Greenfield areas and in Bethel Park.
