Pink Lights Shine On Breast Cancer

People Sponsor Lights To Support Health Center

POSTED: 2:06 pm EDT October 3, 2008

Scottsdale is going pink this month to honor people touched by breast cancer.

Phoenix television station KPHO reported that workers were busy decking out a canal bridge with pink lights and pink ribbons.

"It's so heartwarming to see families come down share the experience," said Julie Robinson, president of Arizona Institute for Breast Health.

Pink ribbons are the international symbol for breast cancer awareness.

On Friday night, the so-called "pink light district" will be switched on for everyone to see.

"It gives me hope," said Christine Lessared, a breast cancer survivor. Lessared is also the executive director of the AIBH, a nonprofit organization that gives women just diagnosed with breast cancer a free second opinion. Lessared said a screening mammogram saved her life.

"Imagine getting a call from the doctor that you have breast cancer," Lessared said. "What's the first thing you want to do? You want to find out what you can do about it."

This is the second year for the lights. It's also a fundraiser. People can sponsor a light to raise money for AIBH, which is funded completely by donations.

"That bridge is all about all of those touched by breast cancer. That's what we want people to understand when they see that bridge. To remember that."

Organizers said even if you haven't been affected in some way by breast cancer, you one day may be.
