A 92-year-old former teacher who died childless last year has willed $318,000 to a Beaver County school district.

Freedom Area School District Superintendent Ron Sofo said officials were surprised to learn of the gift Thursday from Helen Bodkin's estate.

Bodkin died last year and was preceded in death by her husband, leaving behind $1.13 million.

The school district's share of that money includes about $282,000 to fund two $5,000 scholarships to graduating seniors each year. The other $36,000 will be split between four libraries in the district about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

Bodkin taught at Unionville Elementary School from the 1950s until the 1980s, but continued tutoring students into her 90s.
