Junker Earns Michigan Man $226K On eBay

Wreck Ended Up Being Rare 1963 Pontiac Tempest

POSTED: 8:54 am EST December 2, 2008

What started out as a junker listed for $500 on eBay ended up earning a Michigan man nearly a quarter of a million dollars.

It turned out the wreck was a 1963 Pontiac Tempest Super Duty LeMans Coupe, one of just six made by Pontiac as drag racing specials.

The car was sold by an unidentified Harrison, Mich., man for $226,521.63. The owner of the car admitted in the auction he had no idea what he was selling, but fellow eBayers were quick to clue him in.

The auction ended up attracting 71 bids and more than 43,000 views.

The car, as the auction listing states, has neither a motor nor a transmission and the keys for it are missing.

Only two of the original six cars were thought to have been around before the eBay auction brought this one to light. The car, which has 3,165 miles on it, was raced by Stan Antlocer from Detroit.

One of the other six vehicles is documented as destroyed, but the fate of the other three remains unknown. The other two already known to be in existence have been restored.
