Port Authority Union, Management Review Fact-Finder's Report

Transit Employees Considering Strike

POSTED: 5:18 pm EDT August 29, 2008

Port Authority drivers, mechanics and other workers have some new numbers to consider before they decide whether to go on strike in Allegheny County.

A fact-finder from the state was asked to step in to the negotiations and prepare a report, which was delivered to the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 85 and the Port Authority management on Friday.

Neither side would talk publicly about the fact-finder's report.

The union wants to review the numbers in the report and vote next week to see if it can make a deal with the Port Authority.

A strike could be announced at any time, but union president Pat McMahon said it probably wouldn't be for another month, if it happens at all.

Union workers want their healthcare after they retire.

The Port Authority wants to raise the retirement age to 60 and cut costs because it says retirees are outnumbering the amount of current employees on the payroll.

The last transit strike happened in 1992 and lasted 28 days.
