A 1930 Bugatti has the distinction of being the most expensive ever sold, going at auction for $8.7 million in 1983.

As for cars that are actually available on the market, Bugatti again stakes its claim as the maker of the most expensive car available in the world.

According to the Web site thesupercars.org, the Bugatti Veyron, at $1,192,057, is easily the most expensive street legal car available on the market. The car has a top speed of 253 mph, which will deplete the car's tank of gas in 15 minutes -- which is OK since the tires will only last 12 minutes.

Produced by an independent automaker in Italy, the Pagani Zonda C12 F is second on the list at $667,321.

Billed as the fastest car in the world, the Shelby SuperCars Ultimate Aero is the third-most expensive car at $654,400. The cars tops out at more than 257 mph, and if you want one, there's only one place in the world to get it: Motor Cars of Las Vegas. The Shelby Web site says that a second dealership will open in October -- in Dubai.

The LeBlanc Mirabeau, at $645,084, was made for racing but can be bought and shown off to the neighbors.

The first true American production certified supercar, the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo costs $555,000 and can go from zero to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds.

The Koenigsegg CCX is behind the Shelby and Bugatti as the third-fastest car in the world. The car, made in Sweden, costs $545,568.

At $457,250, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is the fastest automatic transmission car in the world with a top speed of more than 207 mph and takes less than four seconds to go from zero to 60 mph.

Porsche stopped making the $440,000 Carrera GT in 2006, but the car was most popular in the United States, where more than half of the 1,200 units built were sold.

Maybach, made by Daimler -- the parent company of Mercedes -- takes up the last two spots on top 10 list. The Maybach 62 ($385,250) and the Maybach 57 ($367,000) are the only sedans to make the list, with each offering luxury as opposed to speed.
