2008 Depending on where you live, gas prices are hitting you harder than other people in western Pennsylvania. The Center for Neighborhood Technology's Housing and Transportation Affordability Index shows how much money people spend on transportation and commuting costs in the WTAE Channel 4 Action News viewing area.Auto ownership, auto use and transit ridership were considered in the center's study.People who pay the most money in transportation costs -- around $4,000 a year -- live in the outlying parts of Beaver and Washington counties and parts of Somerset and Fayette counties that sit further away from the main arteries.Drivers who pay around $3,000 a year live in McCandless and Robinson.Drivers from Ross, Bethel Park, West Mifflin and Lower Burrell pay between $2,400 and $3,000 a year.In Wilkinsburg, Dormont and Bellevue, they pay as much as $1,000 less. And drivers from Pittsburgh's North Side and downtown pay the least -- up to $1,600 a year."In general, I'm still an advocate of the suburbs," Murrysville native Jerry Johns said. "The cost would have to be more exaggerated than they are today." A color-coded map of the neighborhoods in the study is posted at www.htaindex.org. Related Links:
