Surveillance Shows Trap Door Diesel Theft From Gas Station

UPDATED: 3:08 pm EDT May 28, 2008

Surveillance video from a Hermitage, Mercer County, gas station shows thieves using a pickup truck and a trailer to steal diesel fuel from the station's underground tanks.

Hermitage police said the theft happened about a month ago on April 28 at a BP station along East State Street in the city.

The video shows a large maroon truck pulling up with a bright blue trailer. Police believe the thieves used a trap door in the trailer to access the underground tanks without anyone knowing. They then siphoned the fuel from the tanks.

According to police, the truck and trailer are registered to an asphalt contractor based in Ohio. Police said they have identified a suspect and plan to make an arrest on Wednesday.

Police said the same truck was used in diesel thefts at the same location in 2005. Back then, thousands of gallons of diesel were stolen, police said.
