Oscar Legacy: Where Are 'Star Wars' Stars Now?
First Film Nominated For 10 Academy Awards
UPDATED: 10:21 pm EST January 27, 2010
A long time ago, in an auditorium not far away from 20th Century Fox studios, the blockbuster sci-fi adventure "Star Wars" almost took the Academy Awards by force. Nominated for 10 Oscars, filmmaker George Lucas' space opera won six statuettes and earned a seventh as a special achievement award for sound designer Ben Burtt. But the Dark Side of the Academy prevailed in all of the major categories "Star Wars" was nominated in, handing the Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay (both for Lucas) statuettes to Woody Allen for his romantic comedy "Annie Hall." "Star Wars" also came up short in the Best Supporting Actor race, as Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Alec Guiness lost out to Jason Robards for the drama "Julia."The original film trilogy proved to be the most success film of the original trilogy, Oscar-wise, the others still put in respectable appearances. The first sequel, 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back" was nominated for three Oscars and won one, as well as another special achievement award for the film's visual effects. The third film in the original trilogy, 1983's "Return of the Jedi," won yet another special achievement Oscar for visual effects and was nominated for four statuettes.Perhaps the most notable Oscar the "Star Wars" trilogy took in its Academy heyday came with a win for composer John Williams for Best Original Score for the first film. Driven by the film's powerful opening theme, the score earned Williams his third Oscar. So what are the cast members of the original "Star Wars" trilogy up to today?
