Flood Recovery Information

FEMA -- Federal Emergency Management Agency
Affected residents and business owners in the designated counties can begin the disaster application process by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. The toll free telephone numbers will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until further notice.

The Allegheny County Disaster Recovery Center is open at the Community College of Allegheny County, Allegheny campus, Physical Education Building (845 Ridge Ave.). The office will serve as a "one-stop shop for flood recovery programs, services and assistance from the federal, state, county and municipal levels of government," according to a statement from the county Department of Emergency Services. Prior to visitng the center, flood victims are asked to call FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 to begin the process and receive an application number. CCAC has reserved the Student Service Center parking lot on English Way for flood victims. www.fema.gov/

Salvation Army Service Centers
8:30am through 8pm Providing temporary shelter, new clothing, food and more to flood victims. Victims seeking assistance should be prepared to show proof of residence, said Bob Myers, disaster services director. For disaster assistance information, call the Army at (412) 394-4885.

Parental Stress Center
Children's books, toys and other items will be distributed this weekend. Families may call (412) 361-4800 to arrange to receive items. Contributions of used books, toys, clothing and other items are taken daily at the center, 5877 Commerce St., East Liberty.

Cleanup
Residents in flood damaged areas are asked to put flood damaged debris out at your curb or in a designated dumpster. Salvage crews will be around all week collecting debris.

The Dept. of Environmental Protection is offering water testing kits for residents who rely on water wells or springs for their drinking water in counties that have been declared disaster areas by Governor Edward G. Rendell. Legal Aid
Members of the Allegheny County Bar Association will provide free 30-minute legal consultations to flood victims. Lawyers will answer questions on insurance and real estate issues. To schedule a consultation, call (412) 261-5555 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Unemployment Assistance
People displaced from their jobs because of the flooding are eligible for unemployment assistance. Disaster unemployment assistance is available to the self-employed or those who would not normally qualify for regular state unemployment assistance. Details: (877) 345-3382.

Food Replacement
If you lost food that was purchased with the Access card you may request replacement benefits within 10 days of the disaster. Contact your County Assistance Office and view this file for more information.

Property Assessment Relief
If you have been one of the many people affected by the flood, relief may be in sight. People who own homes that have suffered more than 50 percent damage can apply to the Property Assessment Department to get an application for catastrophic loss. Here's what you do: Get an application from the Property Assessments office. An assessor will come to your property and reassess the land only. The assessor's office number is: (412) 350-4600.

Free Hot Water Tanks
The Salvation Army and the major natural gas companies have teamed up with Lowe's and the local plumbers' union to provide tanks to those who meet certain income levels. More Information: (412) 394-4889.
