The crafters are impoverished women in Uganda, who are making beautiful jewelry from recycled paper while creating a sustainable income for themselves. Many of them are HIV+ mothers, refugees from a brutal civil war and former prostitutes. They create beauty while creating a better future for themselves.

The necklaces, bracelets, earrings and other jewelry are very reasonably priced – from as little as $5.00 to $30 – but enables these women to earn an income five to seven times higher than they would otherwise. One hundred percent (100%) of the proceeds from the Henne sale will be donated to BeadforLife.

Polar Bears: Symbols of the Arctic

Join the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium as we celebrate polar bear conservation with a unique opportunity to talk live with scientists living in the Arctic: Home of the Polar Bear. Night At The Races

A Night at the Races will be held at North American Martyrs Church in Monroeville on Saturday, November 7. The event will take place in DeLuca Hall. Super Bingo, Saturday November 7

There will be Super Bingo held on Saturday, November 7th from 8:00 PM until 1:00 AM at St. Ferdinand Church in Cranberry Township. The church is located at 2535 Rochester Road, just off of Route 19. Doors open at 6:00 PM and Early Birds start at 7:30 PM.

St. Barbara Parish, 111 Raymaley Road, Harrison City, PA 15636, will host its Armed Forces Blessing of all branches of the United States Armed Forces on Sunday, November 8, at the close of the 10:30AM Liturgy. The Blessing is non-denominational, inclusive of all, and open to all United States Armed Forces personnel, and their friends and families.

Military active duty, reserve, prior service, and retired are invited to attend Mass at 10:30AM and the Blessing and Breakfast afterward; the Blessing will begin at approximately 11:40AM. Military wearing uniforms are encouraged, but not required.

A free Continental Breakfast will be served in the Social Hall after the Blessing, courtesy of the Ladies Guild and parish of St. Barbara, and all attending are welcome to share support and friendship. Annual Veterans’ Day Program

North American Martyrs Catholic School at 2526 Haymaker Road in Monroeville will present their Annual Veterans’ Day Program. This is the eleventh year of this annual event. It will be held on Wednesday, November 11 at 1:30 PM in DeLuca Hall at the School. The students will honor all veterans and current military personnel in attendance. The Color Guard and Rifle Squad of North Braddock AMVETS Post 60 will present the Posting of Colors. The children will sing patriotic selections and give a handcrafted gift to each veteran. Sit a spell with Aunt Ester, the “washer of souls,” who appears in multiple plays of August Wilson’s “Century Cycle”. The August Wilson Center examines the impact of this legendary character through productions of “Two Trains Running” by Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company; “Gem of the Ocean” by The Black Rep (St. Louis); “Radio Golf” by Penumbra Theatre of Minneapolis and a stage reading of “King Hedley II”. LAWRENCEVILLE COOKIE TOUR

The Cookie Mall is Lawrenceville's annual community-wide bake sale. It is part of the Joy of Cookies Tour. It is an opportunity for non-profits such as the Lawrenceville Historical Society to raise money by making and selling baked goods. There will be more than cookies for sale. The Rotary Club of Lawrenceville manages the Cookie Mall and also participates by baking and selling cookies.

6th ANNUAL CHARITY AUCTION AND COCKTAIL EVENT

Sixth annual event to be held December 7th at Bossa Nova

The Pittsburgh Carson Scholars Fund has announced its 6th Annual Charity Auction & Cocktail Event, to be held Monday, December 7th from 6:00 – 10:00 pm at Bossa Nova in downtown Pittsburgh.

Hosted by Jerome Bettis, James Farrior, and Dr. Alfonso Costa, the highlight of the evening will include autograph signings with members of the Pittsburgh Steelers. In addition, the evening will feature a silent and live auction as well as complimentary appetizers and drinks. Auction items will include a variety of sports memorabilia, luxury items, getaways, and more!

All proceeds from the event benefit the Pittsburgh Carson Scholars Fund, which awards scholarships of $1,000 to students in grades 4-11 who have demonstrated academic excellence and dedication to the community. Last year, we were able to award scholarships to over 100 area students! The charity auction and cocktail event is the Pittsburgh chapter’s sole annual fundraiser.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Association (PSA) will hold a benefit titled "The Holidays at Heinz Hall" on Monday, December 7, at Heinz Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to celebrate the organization's 70th anniversary and to raise funds for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO).

A highlight of the event will be the shopping boutique, which will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for the general public at no charge. A dozen vendors from the Pittsburgh area will set up boutiques and sell a wide array of specialty, holiday and gift items.

A luncheon is open to boutique shoppers for $40 and will be held at 12:30 p.m. on the balcony overlooking the lobby, which will be decorated with the hall's traditional majestic Christmas tree. Reservations are required for the luncheon and are due by Wednesday, November 25, and can be made by calling (412) 392-3303.

In addition, the PSA will sell porcelain ornaments bearing a colorful architectural rendering of Heinz Hall, designed by local artist and PSA board member Susan Castriota-Hamilton, for $15 at the shopping boutique and also in the Heinz Hall lobby on the evenings of performances now through December.

The Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation presents the exhibition: "Botanicals: Environmental Expressions in Art, the Alisa and Isaac M. Sutton Collection" from 23 October 2009 to 29 January 2010.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP FRAIL ELDERLY - North Hills Community Outreach needs “Faith in Action” volunteers to provide nonmedical assistance to frail elderly individuals, allowing them to remain safe and independent in their homes. Volunteers drive the seniors to doctors’ appointments, help with grocery shopping, conduct home safety checks and offer telephone reassurance to prevent isolation and loneliness. Volunteers are also needed to drive the Free Rides for Seniors bus, which operates weekdays along Freeport Road between Blawnox and Sharpsburg. Training is provided for all volunteer opportunities. Muscular Strength & Range of Movement is the core class of the SilverSneakers Program.
