2009 EAST PITTSBURGH -- An Allegheny County housing project will be getting a green makeover, thanks to a grant from the federal economic stimulus package.Prospect Terrace housing project in East Pittsburgh will receive more than $4 million in grant funding to remodel the project's 94 units.Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., toured one of the units before making the announcement on Tuesday.Planned upgrades to the units include adding energy-efficient windows, replacing stoves and refrigerators and installing new light fixtures.Allegheny County public housing officials hope the changes to the unites will reduce gas emissions and save residents money."With these recovery funds, the housing authority will be able to install new geothermal water source heat pumps that will cut Prospect Terrace's energy costs in half," said Shaun Donovan, secretary of Housing and Urban Development."A lot of our residents have asthma or respiratory problems, so I'm really excited about that for more reasons than one, as you can see," said resident Vera Kelly. The work should begin in the spring and should be complete in two years.
