NAACP Calls Pittsburgh Education 'Apartheid Education'

NAACP Upset Over Pittsburgh School Closing Recommendations

POSTED: 10:35 pm EST November 16, 2009

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is claiming inequality in education between black and white students in Pittsburgh Public Schools.

The NAACP marched in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood before Monday night's School Board meeting.

The NAACP calls the current education situation "apartheid education," pointing to recent recommendations to close some city schools.

"We don't even have a plan. Some consultants came forward with some recommendations based on the values of buildings, but there (are) no school closings planned. We are months away from bringing a plan forward, no less the board making decisions," Superintendent Mark Roosevelt said.

The NAACP plans to continue marching every Monday night outside the Pittsburgh Public Schools administration building (click for map).
