2009 ROBINSON TWP, Pa. -- The new Giant Eagle Market District in Robinson Township is the largest grocery store in the Pittsburgh region and the first ever to sell beer."It's huge. I've only just begun exploring, and, you know, it looks fabulous. All the hot foods and the specialty foods are looking really good," said shopper Floy Pease.Channel 4 Action News' Ari Hait reported the store will have an impact on the local economy, as it brings hundreds of jobs to the area and serves as the anchor store of the new Settlers Ridge shopping center.
The 150,000-square-foot supermarket opened at 6 a.m. Thursday. Hait reported a number of people were waiting in the parking lot for the doors to open.Beer will be sold in six-packs for takeout. Giant Eagle secured a state liquor license for the new Robinson store, as well as an existing store in South Strabane."I love the fact there's beer in a supermarket. I've been in so many states where you can do it and I was waiting for Pennsylvania to join with the crowd," said customer Carrie Moniot.Due to the new Market District, the Giant Eagle off Route 60 in Robinson shut down on Wednesday.
