PITTSBURGH -- Some local hunters out looking for ducks and geese accidentally targeted a phone sex hot line instead.Every year waterfowl hunters are required to buy a duck stamp at their local post office. But this year, if you followed the instructions on the back of it, you may have ended up making a new friend of sorts.Gary Fujak of the Pennsylvania Game Commission said for some, hunting season may be off to a captivating start, but for the wrong reasons.
"It probably would have cost them a little bit more than just ordering some more duck stamps. So, they (are) probably shocked, obviously," Fujak said. The duck stamps required to hunt waterfowl cost $15. But if you call the 800-number on the back of this year's card, it may cost you $1.99 per minute. The correct number to call is 1-800-STAMP-24. But on the new cards, it mistakenly gives you 1-800-TRAMP-24 -- a phone sex line. The mistake was made by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service, which prints the cards, not the post office, where they're sold. But this is the second time in two weeks the postal service inadvertently directed people to an adult hot line.In that recent case, the post office delivered cards to Oakland residents with packages waiting at the post office. The phone number on the letters was for another sex line. Those letters were quickly recalled. But this year's duck stamps will not be re-issued. A Fish and Wildlife Service spokesperson told WTAE Channel 4 Action News "the cost is too high. That would be money that wouldn't go to conserving wetlands."That decision is applauded by conservationists like Fujak."Money for habitat and wildlife, and wildlife-related projects, is very important. And any time you lose it, it's a real tragedy, so we don't want to lose any of that money."The phone sex line has been shut down, at least temporarily. One other reminder for those buying duck stamps this year -- make sure you sign your name diagonally across the front. Otherwise, the game commission says you could face a fine of at least $75.
